History

  • Founded in 1961, by 3 legendary industry leaders: Cecil Green, Eugene McDermott and Erik Jonsson, the founders of Texas Instruments, UTD was initially named the Graduate Research Center of the Southwest and later the Southwest Center for Advanced Studies
  • Their vision was to "provide the intellectual atmosphere to compete in new industries dependent upon highly trained and creative minds."
  • SCAS would be a graduate-level only institution until 1975.
  • In 1969,  the founders donated TI owned in NW Richardson and SCAS became part of  The University of Texas System, and was officially named The University of Texas at Dallas.
  • In 1975, junior & senior level students were added
  • In 1990, first freshman class was admitted.
  • The rest is history

UTD Today

  • Enrollment exceeds 15,000.
  • Offers 100+ academic programs at the graduate and undergraduate levels within its 7 schools:
    • School of Arts and Humanities
    • School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences
    • School of Economic, Political and Policy Sciences
    • Erik Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Sciences
    • School of General Studies
    • School of Management
    • School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics
  • UTD has the highest SAT scores of incoming freshman than any other public institution in the state of Texas.
  • 40% of freshman class in top 10% of their high school class.
  • Graduate students, once the majority on campus, now comprise 38% of the student body
  • UTD has 26 doctoral programs.
  • School of Engineering and Computer Science and School of Management each have 4,000+ students enrolled - the largest schools on campus.

The Future at UTD - 10 Year Goals

Plans are currently underway for a 10-year program of expansion, called "Creating the Future," a vision for UTD to meet the needs of the DFW area for a Tier 1 Research University. Plans include:

  • Over $800 million (adding 1.5 million SF) for new facilities, research, academic and student residences, improve infrastructure
  • Adding over 200 top quality new faculty
  • Adding 5,000 new students
  • Increasing endowment to $300 million and 
    current use gifts by $150 million
  • Doubling research productivity to $100 million
